PUPPY REGISTER
Besides reading the advice on this page, if you are planning to go and view a pure bred Stafford for sale take a look at our Sample Breeder or Owner Registration Certificates page to see what the correct documentation should look like. If the registration documents you are shown are not the same as those you'll see here the Stafford you're seeing is not registered with the Kennel Club and may not be a pure bred Stafford.

ADVICE TO THOSE PURCHASING DOGS
1. Before purchasing a dog, consider all the implications including the most suitable breed. Visit a dog show, see the dogs and talk to the breeders.
2. Buy a puppy from a breeder, in preference to a dealer Visit the kennels, see the puppy preferably with it's mother and the litter.
3. The breeder should provide the purchaser with a signed pedigree (three generations, at least), a detailed receipt, diet instructions and with the Kennel Club registration certificate on which the transfer section on the reverse has been signed by the breeder .
4. Not all pedigree dogs are registered with the Kennel Club but if a dog is eligible for registration only the breeder can apply and it is important, therefore, that if the puppy is to be registered the formalities are completed by the breeder before the puppy is purchased.
5. If a breeder claims he has applied for registration but he is unable to produce the official registration certificate in his name, the purchaser should insist on a written undertaking that the certificate with the transfer section duly signed will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
6. If a puppy is advertised as "KC Registered" the purchaser should retain the advertisement or any other literature until a certificate is available as more disputes arise in this area than in any other in the registration process.
7. When the purchaser is given a registration certificate, it should be signed on the reverse by the transferor (breeder) and the transferee (purchaser) and then sent to the Kennel Club with the correct transfer fee. A new certificate will then be issued in the name of the purchaser. The date of transfer is the date the dog changed hands.
8. If the purchaser has an affix and wishes to add his affix to the name of the puppy he should complete a change of name Form 8 and send it to the Kennel Club with the additional fee.
9. It is recommended that the new owner completes the transfer formalities as soon as possible after the purchase. If the registration certificate is lost or mislaid it will be necessary to locate the breeder and this can often be very difficult with the passage of time, especially if the breeder has moved.
10. The purchaser will not be able to register any progeny with the Kennel Club until the transfer process is completed.
11. The purchaser will not be able to exhibit the dog at shows until application has been made for and its transfer is granted.
Mobile Phone Numbers
In addition to the above points The Society would also like to advise prospective purchasers to be cautious when responding to advertisements where only a mobile phone number is given. Although a good deal of these advertisements are perfectly bona fide, the old saying "Buyer Beware" should be borne in mind. We would advise purchases to be extra vigilant. As mentioned above you should insist on visiting the kennels and meeting the owners and their dogs, check all paperwork carefully and ask for a proper means of contact.
